The best music visualizer for Mac, compared.

Updated 26 October 2026

The Mac still has a music visualizer built in: open the Music app and choose Window → Visualizer. It only draws what the Music app itself plays, though, so the moment you listen in Spotify, a browser or a DAW, you need something else. This page compares the music visualizers you can run on a Mac today, what each one hears and what it costs, and says plainly where LIQUIDWAVE fits and where another app is the better choice.

What to look for

What it hears. Since macOS 14.2, an app can hear the Mac's system audio directly, with one permission and no virtual audio driver. Apps that don't use this need BlackHole, Loopback or a similar driver, or they only draw their own player's audio or the microphone.

What it looks like. Spectrum bars, preset engines, VJ tools and curated scenes are very different things to watch. Decide what you'd leave on a screen for a whole album.

Where it can play. In a window, full screen, behind your desktop icons, or full screen when you step away from the Mac.

Why people pick LIQUIDWAVE

Scenes made like pictures, not presets. LIQUIDWAVE's scenes are curated, not generated. Each one is a finished picture with its own palette and its own way of moving: a drawn waveform, Chladni figures, a wireframe sea, lasers through stage haze, an aurora, neon grids, liquid chrome, a lava lamp, a green oscilloscope. They are grouped into ten styles and made to be watched for a whole album.

The music moves each part on purpose. It splits the sound into seven bands on every frame and picks out the kick, the snare and the hi-hat, so a bassline lifts one thing and a snare sends a ring through another. Motion follows the tempo instead of jumping on every beat, and the chrome scenes let the sound shape the surface but never flash the light.

It hears the whole Mac. System Audio uses the capture built into macOS 14.2 and later: one permission, no driver, and it works with Spotify, Apple Music's purchased tracks, YouTube in a browser, or a DAW. A leveler keeps a quiet player from shrinking the picture. Listen Mode hears the room through the microphone, for a turntable.

It belongs on a Mac. The song appears in a small Now Playing island under the notch. Desktop Mode plays a scene behind your icons, When you're away fills the screens when you leave, and Mix Shuffle picks scenes to fit each song with Apple Intelligence, on the Mac. It is also on Windows and Linux, with the same scenes.

Where another app is the better fit

  • You only listen in the Music app and want nothing installed. The built-in visualizer is right there.
  • You want thousands of presets, or to write your own. projectM loads MilkDrop presets; LIQUIDWAVE has no preset editor.
  • You perform live. Synesthesia and Arkestra are VJ tools that send their output to projectors and other software.
  • You want spectrum bars in a small window. Nyquist does exactly that.

Honest notes

DRM-protected Apple Music streams are silenced by macOS for every capture app, LIQUIDWAVE included. Purchased and DRM-free tracks work, and so does Listen Mode through the microphone. Here is the longer answer.
