Wire: a 3D wireframe music visualizer for your Mac.

Updated 7 October 2026

Wire draws music as 3D wireframe: meshes of real lines seen through a camera, a sea out to the horizon, an island of peaks, a drumhead, a tube, a ribbon. The sound moves the geometry, and the light follows it.

One idea: a mesh the music lifts

Every Wire scene is real geometry, built on the graphics chip each frame and drawn as hairlines on black. Where lines overlap their light adds up, so a ridge seen along its length glows. Horizon, Ocean, Waves and Dome share one grid of triangles, a sea seen from four cameras.

That is what makes Wire a 3D wireframe music visualizer rather than a flat one: the music changes a surface, and the camera shows it in depth. The low end raises it, the kick heaves it, the mids and highs fray the mesh, and the hats spark the crests. Motion runs on counters that only climb, so a swell never rolls backward. A brightness lift on a hit passes through a limiter written against the WCAG 2.3.1 flash threshold.

The scenes

In the order the app lists them:

Horizon. A wireframe sea from just above the surface, like surf watched from the shore. Sound raises long lavender swells that turn mint-white along the crests, and the ink snaps to rose on the kick. Above the horizon the far sea hangs faintly upside down, reflected in a mirror ceiling.

Ocean. Horizon's sea from a raised camera, so the swells lay out in depth, steel blue at rest and azure as the music opens up. About once a minute a mirror ceiling eases in and holds the far sea upside down for a few seconds.

LIQUIDWAVE's Ocean scene: a violet-blue wireframe sea receding to a bright horizon, swells rising in the foreground
Ocean, with music playing.

Waves. The same grid as weather: four wave trains cross, so long crests march in from the horizon in sets, run tall for a while and go quiet on their own. The tempo walks the sets in, and a loud passage brings them sooner.

Dome. One broad swell rises ahead of the camera, with smaller ones around it. Each small swell belongs to a drum, the kick, the snare or the hats, and pops when its drum hits.

Peaks. An island of jagged peaks floating in the dark, with two fainter copies stacked above and below. The bass raises it, the highs sharpen and climb the summits, and the palette leans with the mix: all blue when the bass rules, green and white when the highs do.

Membrane. New in 1.1. A round drumhead in a polar wire mesh, seen from above at an angle. The music sets the skin vibrating in the real modes of a circular membrane: the low end heaves the whole skin, the mids raise nodal lines, the top of the mix covers it in a fine pattern. A kick strikes the center and a ring runs out to the rim and back; a click strikes the skin under the pointer.

Membrane, a kick's ring on its way to the rim.

Tunnel. New in 1.1. A wireframe tube seen from inside, a spectrogram in three dimensions. Every ring is a moment of the music, its shape the spectrum at that moment, bass at the floor and highs at the ceiling. The newest stands around you and the older ones recede, so a kick swells the floor and the swelling runs off down the tube. It has no hue, only white falling to graphite.

Ribbon. New in 1.1. One long ribbon of hairlines tracing a knot and twisting as it goes, closed as a Möbius band. Its single side reads pale coral where it faces you and gray where it turns away. Sound rolls the twist along the strip and orbits the camera, always forward; each kick sends a twist both ways, a glint that travels.

With different music

Wire answers a track with a low end and a build. Bass lifts every sea and the island, kicks heave them, and a dense top end frays the mesh. Peaks shows the balance of a mix in its colors, and Tunnel its shape: a bass-heavy record swells the floor, a bright one the ceiling. Membrane hands each band's mode to the next every eight beats, so a steady groove keeps changing the pattern.

With Wire chosen in the Styles panel and Shuffle on, LIQUIDWAVE plays every Wire scene once before any comes round again.

What Wire won't do

Wire is dark until the music gives it something. The seas lie flat in silence, Membrane is a still disc, Tunnel a still cylinder and Ribbon hangs where it was. A quiet intro or a breakdown leaves most of the frame black until the drop, and in a bright room the hairlines read faint. For light on screen at every moment, try Lighting or Chroma.

A free scene

Wave, in Line, is free for good. The free download also includes one more scene you pick, and it can be a Wire scene. One purchase unlocks the rest, inside the app.

The other styles

Wire is one of ten styles across 60+ scenes. Line draws the music with a single pen. Graphic prints it as flat pattern. Raster builds it from points. In Desktop Mode, any of them can play behind your desktop icons. Every style is on the styles page.

Questions

Why is a Wire scene dark?
The Wire scenes are hairlines on black. In silence or a quiet passage the seas lie flat and the drumhead and the tube stand still, and they fill out as the music builds. If one stays flat while music plays, LIQUIDWAVE may be hearing silence: check that it is allowed under Screen & System Audio Recording in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Are the Wire scenes real 3D?
Yes. Each one is a mesh of real lines, rebuilt on the graphics chip every frame and drawn through a perspective camera. Lines add light where they overlap, which is why a crest seen edge-on glows.
What is new in Wire in LIQUIDWAVE 1.1?
Membrane, a drumhead ringing in its modes; Tunnel, a wireframe tube the music flows away down; and Ribbon, a Möbius strip of hairlines.
Can a Wire scene be my free scene?
Yes. The free download includes Wave, from Line, and one more scene you pick from any style, Wire included. One purchase inside the app unlocks the rest.
